ACReSAL Plants Economical Trees In Shanono Local government

Sate Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape (ACReSAL) Project has planted over 2,000 fruit-bearing trees in the Shanono Local Government Area of the state, State Project Coordinator, Dr. Dahiru M Hashim said the tree planting exercise has enormous benefits to the community.

Adding that plantation of the economic trees marks a significant step forward for the project mission to build agricultural resilience in semi-arid regions. Fruit-bearing trees not only provide sustenance but also contribute to the economic prosperity of communities.

The flag-off of the program took place at the palace of the District Head.

The Project Coordinator represented by Aminu Gidado, the State Project Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, enumerated the importance of tree planting and how relevant it is for the trees to be taken care of by the people in the community.

“Not just planting the trees, we must understand the basic knowledge that is related to trees and the relevance they have in our society,’’ the Project Coordinator said.

A lecturer with the Department of Environmental Studies, Bayero University Kano, (BUK) Ummukulsum Muhammad gave more insights on tree planting and how to cater to them, she says “Before I tell you how to plant trees, let me draw your attention to the effect of cutting down trees, trees bear fruit, its medicinal and have so many nutritional values to the earth, not just only to humans.”

Muhammad noted that “When planting a tree, it’s very crucial you do it early in the morning or late in the evening, there are so many ways to plant a tree, which need careful intervention and knowledge”

Over 2000 fruit-bearing trees planted at Shanono Local Government include a variety of species ranging from Mango, Orange, Guava, and Lemon, carefully selected to thrive in the semi-arid climate of the region
