Sen. Lawan Accuses Information Minister of Politicizing Borno’s Security Crisis
By Hussaini Ibrahim Sulaiman
Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, representing Borno State at the Nigerian Senate, has called on the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, to desist from politicizing the lingering security challenges in the state.
Lawan made the remarks in response to comments by the minister criticizing Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, over his recent disclosure that Boko Haram insurgents were regaining control of some parts of the state.
The senator expressed disappointment in the minister’s stance, describing his comments as “disrespectful and unfortunate.”
He faulted Idris for allegedly abandoning his primary duty of promoting Nigeria’s image globally in favor of attacking a governor who is working at the frontlines of the insurgency crisis.
“It is unfortunate that a minister charged with the responsibility of showcasing Nigeria to the world is instead engaging in needless political commentary over Governor Zulum’s honest remarks,” Lawan stated.
In a separate statement, Minister Idris defended the federal government’s efforts in combating insurgency, insisting that security agencies were making progress due to improved collaboration and resilience on the part of troops.
“The federal government remains committed to restoring peace in Borno and other troubled areas. Our security forces are achieving results through their dedication and the support they receive from stakeholders,” the minister noted.
Governor Zulum, while speaking on Monday, had raised alarm that Boko Haram militants appeared to be reclaiming some territories in Borno State—a development that has sparked reactions across the political and security spectrum.
